Sewing a button is a simple task that anyone can do with a little bit of practice. It’s a good skill to have in your repertoire, as buttons can come undone at the most inopportune times. Here are a few tips on how to sew a button so that it will stay put.
Start by threading a needle with a length of thread that is twice the distance from the top of the button to the bottom. You want to be able to tie a knot at the end of the thread, so make sure you have enough.
Next, take the needle and poke it through the fabric from the back side. Come up through the fabric right next to the button, then poke the needle back down through the fabric. This time, come up through the fabric on the other side of the button. You should now have the thread wrapped around the button twice.
Now, poke the needle back down through the fabric, making sure to go through all the layers of fabric. Come up through the fabric a few stitches away from where you last came up. This time, take the needle and poke it through the loop of thread that is closest to the fabric.
Now, poke the needle back down through the fabric, and come up through the loop of thread that is furthest from the fabric. You should now have the thread wrapped around the button three times.
To finish, poke the needle back down through the fabric, making sure to go through all the layers of fabric. Tie a knot in the thread, and trim the excess.
With a little bit of practice, sewing a button will be a breeze. Just remember to take your time and go slowly. And always test the button before you stitch it onto your garment to make sure it’s the right size and color.
